Best type of handgun round for max damage?

2 Attachment(s)
Recently, I bought some Federal Expanding Full Metal Jacket (45 ACP 200 grain +P). Then I started hearing from various random sources that the best ammo out there is the Federal Tactical HST and bought some of that in 230 grain +P.

HST has been called the next generation hydra-shok. Any opinions or additional types of ammo to consider?

Here's a picture of the expanded HST. Also a PDF doc on it: http://www.le.atk.com/pdf/HSTPoliceADLO05lr.pdf

If anyone is misfortunate enough to be shot with a .45, the type of round won’t matter. They’ll be going down, without further resistance.

Re: Best type of handgun round for max damage?

The most important thing is that it feed reliably.

That being said, the general consensus seems to be that the following 3 rounds are the best.

Federal 230 grain HST
Winchester 230 Grain Ranger-T (RA45T)
Speer 230 grain Gold Dot

All three will reliably pass the IWBA 4-layer denim test. (i.e. penetrate between 12 and 18 inches of ballistic gelatin after passing through 4 layers of denim). Pick one of these, make certain it functions in your weapon and call it good.

I'm pretty certain the Cor-bon DPX which uses an all copper Barnes X bullet also passes, but I have not seen the data to substantiate this.

Speer also has a new line of "short barrel" loads which feature a redesigned HP so they will open up at lower velocities. I carry the 230 Gold Dot short barrel in my Kimber Ultra.

Ditto what LibertyAZ said:

Federal 230 grain HST
Winchester 230 Grain Ranger-T (RA45T)
Speer 230 grain Gold Dot

If you have to shoot a person, and you have a mag full of Hollow points, Ultra shock, or any other fancy type of rounds then be ready for the DA to harp to the jury about the "Devastating" rounds in your gun. He will go on to preach to the jury how you were "Out looking for trouble" because you had these man killer bullets. Just run ball ammo, dont give the DA any more ammo to use against you in court. Practice, practice, practice. Shot placement is EVERYTHING. Even if you were defending your life, you will still go before a jury, Guaranteed!!

I get what your saying and I believe there is merit to it, but in my state it's illegal for me to take the gun outside of my house, unless I am transporting it directly to the range, or holding some kind of event to display my collection. Only real time I will be using my handgun for protection is in the home. If they are in my home, they are getting max damage. I'd hope the DA could understand that.

I picked up my Concealed Carry permit this morning! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

My wife and I talk dreamily about moving back home to Wisconsin, but this 2nd ammendment issue to KEEP and BEAR is a reall hang-up for me. In Wisconsin you can't even have a stun gun or pepper spray! Even Minnesota will let you have pepper spray.

Just to get back on topic... I REALLY like the Federal Hydra-shock and Federal Tactical Bonded as far as factory ammo goes. I've just reloaded some 9mm with Speer Gold Dots. I've seen the Golden Saber for reloading, but I think the Gold Dots are more popular.

Your lawyer had better remind the judge and jury that Law Enforcement uses the same ammo...or get another lawyer.

Uh…You haven’t noticed, some people are more equal than others (Cops vs Citizens). And my Attorney is the best money can buy, I won.

Well, I hope I am tried by a jury of my PEERS...and I know full good and well there is no guarantee today of justice in our courts of law.

You can be acquitted and be guilty....or convicted and be innocent.

You won’t be…the best you can hope for are some old black women, a few soccer moms, and a couple of out of work twenty-somethings.

Sad to say you probally wont get that lucky........ they will pack that jury so the new DA can make their next career move up the ladder with another "dangerous felon" off the streets.

The only place I have seen it in stock right now is this place and they only have +P's at the moment in 45, not sure about other sizes:

http://www.streichers.com/ProductLis...ory=AMMO_DHAND

They really have a good in-stock indicator when you get to your cart. I did a first small order with them last week and they shipped next day. Larger second order and they shipped next day again.

I used to just buy from ammoman, but his stock is dwindling. When I asked him about getting in some Federal stock he said, "They tell me it's going to be a bit.
They are only shipping to Govt. and LE right now.
Eric"

What do you think of this?

The Taurus .410 in the other thread is actually much nicer.

The two shot is a piece of junk, don't waste your money.
The ultra-Compact Snake Charmer is a nice shotgun.

Re: Best type of handgun round for max damage?

I use hollow points in my home defense and CCW pistols because I don't want to have a chance of hitting an innocent because of overpenetration.
I keep this in mind as well as what Mtn Man says. I believe him to be right also. For these reasons, I split the difference by using cheap hollow point rounds like the standard Wincester personal protection or Remington hollow points from the 100 round Wally World packs. Don't know if my choice is right or not, but I figure in a justified CCW shooting situation that my ammo choice would show a concern for protecting bystanders as well as not carrying the baddest rounds available.
